Department of Ilmul Saidla

Department of Ilmul Saidla (Unani Pharmacy) has been set up in the institute from the session 2009-2010 in view of preparing well trained post graduates in Unani Pharmacy. State-of-art laboratories have been established in this department equipped with necessary instruments with latest technology. These laboratories are providing best available facilities / training to the students, researchers of the system and other stakeholders in Unani Pharmacy. Intention of the facility is to impart information to improve the various dosage forms used in Unani Medicine, modification of dosage forms, standardization and quality assurance of the finished products etc. The Department is attached with full functioning and well-equipped pharmacy unit where more than seventy formulations are regularly prepared and dispensed to the IPD and OPD unit of NIUM hospital. Post graduate students of the dept, are also posted in Pharmacy for academic training.

Presently the department has three Associate professor / Reader. Faculty members of department are actively engaged in teaching, research and other academic and administrative activities. Till now, the department on academic platform has endorsed 54 research scholars to whom post graduate degree has been awarded. At present 16 research scholars are enthusiastically pursuing the P.G. course.

Department has four labs namely Quality control, Drug testing laboratory, Pharmaceutics Lab (Compound formulation Lab) and Ilmul Saidla Instrumentation Lab, these labs are well equipped with analytical tools and pharmaceutical machineries like Lyophilizer, Tablet disintegration apparatus, Dissolution apparatus, Melting point apparatus, Granulator, pH meter, Horizontal shaker, Auto clave, Colorimeter, Humidifier, Dehumidifier, Magnetic stirrer, Muffle furnace, Stability chambers, Hot air oven, Paper Chromatography cabinet, Friability tester, Electronic balance, Analytical balance, Water bath shaker, Silverson's high shear rotor/stator laboratory mixer homogenizer, Abbe Refractometer, Hand Refractometer, Pulveriser, Sieve shaker, Herbs Grinder, Capsule filling machine, Clevenger’s apparatus, Colorimeter, Crimping machine, Deionizer , Double Distillation Apparatus, Electronic digital microprocessor based Analytical Balance, Fumigator, Heating Mantles, Hot Plate, Moisture meter / apparatus, Spray dryer, Tablet Hardness tester (Monsatto), Tablet Hardness tester (Pfizer), Tap and Bulk Density Apparatus, UV cabinet for TLC, Vacuum oven, Vertical Auto Clave, Water Bath Rectangular etc.

Since the establishment, Department has shown a lot of progress both academically and in research fields of major interest in the special context of improvement in various dosage forms used in Unani Medicine, preparation of modified / newer dosage forms and Standardization, stability and Quality assurance work of the finished products. Department has also planned for developing Cosmeticology section, separate unit for taklees, microbiology laboratory and other sophisticated facility. To achievement of the department, many trained professionals of the department are working as academician, successful entrepreneur in Unani pharmaceutical Industry, skilled physician in Government and private sector etc. To credit of the department, it holds near about 246 publications in the form of research papers in indexed journal and books.
