This Department was established in 2004 as department of Hifzane Sehat. But with the growing concern of social factors in the causation as well as in prevention of diseases; it was renamed in 2006 as Department of Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib with the objective of developing skilled and motivated public health professionals. This department is imparting high quality teaching and training at post graduate level. The department is deeply committed to train the next generation of leaders in public health through class room instructions, seminars, journal clubs, group discussions and field work. Till now, the department on academic platform has endorsed 39 research scholars to whom post graduate degree has been awarded. At present 17 research scholars are enthusiastically pursuing the P.G. course. Faculty members of department are actively engaged in teaching and research activities. They have excellent track records of high quality publications in journals of national and international repute. Presently the department has one Reader and three lecturers.
This department is dedicated to promoting health across the lifespan of people and in all segments of population through research, education and training, community outreach services and health promotion campaigns. Major thrust of the department is on harnessing the potential of Unani system of medicine in preventive health care services through literary research, Nutritional epidemiology, Pharmaco-epidemiology, Risk factor trials and Preventive trials. Department on regular basis organizes health awareness programmes, health camps for school children and mobile clinics to provide promotive and preventive health care services to the community. Apart from this, department is also providing services to the community through Health promotive unit and IEC unit in NIUM hospital.
The department has public health museum with necessary collection of 3D models and well defined mounted charts. It has essential equipments for water quality testing, air quality monitoring and nutritional assessment. Department is also maintaining seminar library having reference and textbooks on the subject of Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib.
Department has also planned for developing public health laboratory and establishment of rural and urban training health centres. Department is consistently working towards discovery of new knowledge in domain of public health and is eminently geared for its forward journey towards academic excellence. It is hoped that this journey will prove beneficial for development of this discipline in particular and the institution as a whole.
