National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru, a premier institute and Hospital for
research and training in Unani medicine in India, is working under the administrative control of
Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India as an autonomous organization. It was established in 1984 as
a joint venture with Govt. of Karnataka but research and academic activities were started in 2004
with the admission of Ist batch of P.G Scholars. The vision of this institute is to strengthen
and promote excellence in education, research and patient care in Unani medicine.
Presently, the hospital of the institute has an OPD wing and IPD of 180 beds with separate wards
for male and female patients. Health huts are also operational for those patients who want full privacy
with upgraded facilities on payment basis. Clinical services are provided to the patients from general
and speciality OPDs of Musculoskeletal, Skin and cosmetology, Gastrointestinal, Hepato-biliary,
Neurological, Psychiatric, Geriatric and Lifetsyle disorders. Advice on nutritional plan for specific
conditions is also given to the patients. Antenatal care and family planning services are also provided
in Obstetrics and Gynaecological disorders unit. The hopsital has well established Regimenal therapy
centre. It is a special modality of treatment, where non-pharmaco therapeutic modalities (Hijama, Dalk,
Hammam, Nutool and many more) are employed in the management of various disorders.
Neuro-muscular rehabilitation was established with the broad aim of catering the needs of patients
suffering from neuro-muscular disorders like stroke, hemiplegia and paraplegia, myopathy, motor-neuron
diseases, parkinsonism etc. Besides providing Unani treatment, it is also equipped with modern diagnostic
laboratories-Pathology, Biochemistry, Radiology and Ultra Sonography. NIUM hospital is also providing health
care facilities to socioeconomically weaker groups at their door steps by organizing Health camps and Mobile
Clinics. Recently, NIUM hospital has been accredited by NABH. It is the first NABH accredited Unani hospital.
Institute offers post graduate teaching in eight disciplines viz: Moalajat (Medicine), Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology),
Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib (Preventive and Social Medicine), Ilmul Qabalat wa Amraze Niswan(Obstetrics and Gynaecology),
Ilmul Saidla (Unani Pharmacy), Kulliyat (Basic Principles), Ilaj Bil Tadbeer (Regimenal Therapy) and Ilmul Jaharat
(Surgery). The institute has to its credit of starting the Ph.D in two disciplines viz. Moaljat and Ilmul Advia.
It is the first institute of Unani Medicine in India, which has started PhD courses.
So far 294 dissertations on Pre-clinical, Clinical and Epidemiological studies have been submitted to the
affiliating Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. The quality of research is ensured by monitoring
of research work is done by various committees -Scientific Advisory Committee, Institutional Ethics Committee for
Bio-Medical Research on Human subjects and Animal ethics committee. The institute publishes two Bi-annual Journals
namely, “Journal of Research in Unani Medicine” in English and “Tarjumane-e-Tib” in Urdu. The Institute also
publishes a News Letter regularly. Beside this, faculty members regularly publishes their research work in peer
reviewed, indexed journals of National and International repute.
Good Clinical Practice and Good Teaching Practices are the two areas where AYUSH practitioners and teachers
need to be regularly updated to keep up the standards of health delivery in accordance with the emerging trends.
Also many issues of the curriculum cannot be covered, hence augmentations and clarification through direct
interaction with the resource persons and domain experts is required. Therefore, NIUM regularly organizes academic
events like CME, Workshops, Seminars and Guest Lectures. Faculty members are also deputed to various training
programmes to update their technical and professional skills. The institute remains in touch with premier
scientific institution like NIMHANS, Bengaluru; Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy, Bengaluru; Aligarh Muslim University,
Aligarh and Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi to enhance teaching and research standards.
Under the guidance of Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, the institute is trying its best to achieve the targets
to become a centre of excellence in academics, research, training and patient care.
